I Think I’m Going To Lose My Job, What Can I Do To Quickly Ramp Up My Internet Income?

This week, I received a PM from one of my Insider Circle members who said it was looking like his full-time job was about to be eliminated and he wanted some advice about which online business model he should focus on to ramp up his internet business and income as quickly as possible.

In these uncertain economic times, I thought perhaps some of my readers may be facing a similar situation. So I decided to share some of the advice I gave him…

I understand how scary this situation must be for you.

The small company where I was employed for nine years got bought by a large corporation in June 2005 (the day before my 9 year anniversary). I stayed on for 16 months to help with the transition.

I was the Senior Administrator/Office Manager for the company, so I was in charge of all the documents, facilities management, office equipment, etc. While the original owners walked away with $8 million, the long-term employees, such as myself and many who had been there even longer and helped build the company got nothing! We weren’t even sure how much longer we’d have a job!

During those last 16 months of employment, I knew my days were numbered, so I cut waaay back on my living expenses and saved as much money as I could. I had been selling stuff on eBay for several years on the side and was a PowerSeller, so I increased the number of products I was listing.

I had also built up a lot of vacation time and personal leave time at my job, so I took extra time off and used it to really focus on building my business.

By the time I left the company in October 2006, I had saved enough money to pay my bills for 6 months and had built up my eBay business to where it was almost making enough to match my salary. I had to make some sacrifices and do without some things, but it was worth it!

Now, I realize your situation is probably quite a bit different from mine because I’m not married and my daughter is grown, so I only have myself to be concerned with.

However, you CAN do something similar. Besides, you may not have a choice if you lose your job.

If you haven’t already done so, sit down with your spouse and discuss the situation. It’s very important that you have their support, understanding and cooperation. I’m not trying to get in your personal business or anything, I’m just saying what you probably already know, LOL!

Go over your budget and cut out or at the very least, cut back on all non-essentials. Instead of eating out once or twice a week, cut back to only eating out once or twice a month. Instead, have a date nite at home, send the kids to Grandma’s or the neighbor’s house for a couple of hours and cook for your spouse, rent a movie instead of going out to see a movie.

Carry your lunch to work, if you drink a beer/cocktail or two each evening when you get home from work, cut back to only drinking one or two on Friday and/or Saturday nite. You’ll be surprised at how much money you can save just by cutting back on stuff and doing things a little bit differently. Okay, I’ll stop preaching now, LOL!

But, seriously, that’s how I was able to set aside the extra money, so I knew my bills would be paid when I left my job.

Unfortunately, there is no “right” or “perfect” business model. The best advice I can give you is to read the ebook 5 Bucks a Day, if you have it. If you don’t you can get it here, 5 Bucks A Day, for only $7 and it’s worth every penny! I think paid around $40 for it when it first came out and I’ve made that money back more than hundred times over as a result of reading it. I promise…it will change the way you look at your online business!

Once you read 5 Bucks a Day, you’ll understand that you can pick any business model and make money if you focus on it and with the 5 Bucks a Day plan you can pick one to work on this week (or month), another one next week, etc., and they don’t have to be completely different things.

You can decide that this week you’re going to focus on building 3 eBay blogs in the exercise and fitness niche, next week you may want to build 3 blogs in the diet and weightloss niche with Adsense and ClickBank products on them. And you may decide to spend your time in the third week building Squidoo lenses and Hub Pages and do some massive social bookmarking or directory submissions to point back at those 6 sites you built.

The most important thing is to make a decision and then act on it. Observe what’s working and making money for you and keep taking action and focusing in that direction. One foot in front of the other.

If you’ve been trying to make money online for six months or more, you probably already have enough information, enough experience and enough resources to make a living online, you just have to make a commitment and focus on doing whatever it takes to get things done!

If you have paid leave time on your job such as vacation time, personal days, sick days or holidays, use as much of that time away from your job as you possibly can working on your business. If there are too many distractions at home, go to a coffee shop or a library for a few hours to work.

To help me stay organized and focused, I keep a big note pad next to me as I work with a to-do list written on it. Some people use a whiteboard, but I like the notepad because I like marking stuff off when I’ve completed it. I also use it to jot down ideas as they come to me and draw flow charts of how I want my sites to look/work.

The to-do lists really do help me to stay focused, because I don’t have to wonder “Okay, now what am I going to do today?” or “Where did I leave off yesterday?” when I sit down at my computer to work. My list is right there to tell me!

I usually add to my to-do list whenever I get down to only a few items left or when I run across something that needs attention.

I promise you, you will be surprised by what you can accomplish if for just one or two hours every single day you turn off the TV, turn off the phone, find a quite place to work with no distractions and no interruptions and focus on completing 3-6 items on your to-do list. And when that hour or two is up, stop and go spend time with your family and friends with the satisfaction that you’ve made progress towards your goal.
